The on board computer in your car constantly monitors for operational issues and sends out a signal whenever it detects any irregular activity. The computer tries to correct the problem first, then alerts you to the issue by illuminating the check engine light if it can't put things right. When that happens, you need to pull over, turn off the car and check your gas cap. (To be safe, you should also check for low oil pressure or overheating before restarting your car. You should not operate your car under either of those circumstances.
